Job Description
Job title: Director of Communications
Location: Berkeley, California
Reports to: Executive Director
Job Summary
This is a senior position with an innovative, entrepreneurial nonprofit organization. The ideal candidate is innovative, has a sophisticated understanding of communications, and thinks strategically – and across departments. Still in a start-up phase, the Brower Center seeks an individual who can be creative with resources and leverage networks to fulfill our mission and achieve financial sustainability. This position is responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies that reach multiple constituencies and support efforts to generate earned and contributed income. The Director of Communications works with the Executive Director to design and implement a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy that includes strategic partnerships, results in diverse sources of funding, and raises awareness of activities at the Center.
Essential Functions
• Develop and implement annual communications plan
• Serve as primary writer and editor for all organizational communications
• Develop consistent, clear, and compelling messages for various stakeholders and areas of operation, including sales for event rentals; office tenants; sponsors; donors; and potential donors
• Create and manage key public relations and communications documents and materials for print and online media
• Manage media relations
• Develop strategy for and manage marketing and communications efforts for all public programs and exhibitions
• Manage communication with and among resident organizations
• Develop and implement signage plan for on-site promotions
• Help identify and support establishment of strategic partnerships that maximize earned and contributed revenue and support the Center’s mission
• Research, write, and prepare promotional presentations in coordination with Executive Director
• Draft proposals and prepare reports for prospective partners, institutional funders and corporate sponsors
• Support the planning of fundraising and donor events
• Support the development and implementing of a donor benefits program
• Manage surveys and other tools for assessing customer satisfaction among rental clients
• Work with Executive Director, Treasurer, and other staff to develop annual budget
Job Requirements and Qualifications
Experience: Minimum three years as lead strategist and manager of all marketing and communications for a nonprofit or business. Business or nonprofit development experience is ideal, including supporting efforts to secure contributions and sponsorships and proposal writing and presentation.
Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Qualifications:
• Exceptional communication and writing skills and excellent oral presentation skills
• Familiarity with social media and ability to see beyond the hype to emerging trends
• Proven experience managing designers and developers for print and web
• Ability to negotiate and manage contracts and contractors
• Familiarity with diverse communication outlets within and outside of the environmental and social venture communities, including social media, blogs, print, newsletters, and others
• Ability to thrive on a small team in a start-up environment
• Ability to take full responsibility for deliverables and meet deadlines
• Experience with budget development and monitoring
• Collaborative and able to quickly recognize and respond to opportunities
• Commitment to environmental stewardship, health, and justice
• Proven proficiency with Apple computers and appropriate tools for high quality presentations
• Familiarity with SalesForce.com ideal
